Getting Around Massachusetts

Public Transportation

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, otherwise known as the MBTA, or the T, is eastern Massachusetts' major public transportation system. It operates bus, commuter rail, subway, and ferry service.

Boston, Cambridge, and some nearby towns are connected via the MBTA's subway system. The commuter rail extends further, deep into the North Shore up to the Lowell/Haverhill and the Newburyport areas, west to Worcester, and south as far as Providence, Rhode Island.

Other systems in northeastern Massachusetts include the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority in the Lawrence, Haverhill, and Newburyport area; the Lowell Regional Transit Authority; and the Cape Ann Transportation Authority in the Gloucester and Rockport area.

In southeastern Massachusetts, the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority operates in the New Bedford and Fall River area, and the Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority services Attleboro to Plymouth.

The Worcester Regional Transit Authority services 35 communities in Central MA with bus service. Also in Central MA are the Montachusett Regional Transit Authority and the Franklin Regional Transit Authority.

Among public transportation services in Western Massachusetts are the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority, the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority, and UMass Transit Services.

The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority runs buses throughout Cape Cod, the Martha's Vineyard Regional Transit Authority's buses loop around the island, and the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority offers shuttle service on Nantucket.
