Driving Laws

A couple of rules of the road in Massachusetts that differ in some other states include right on red and the policy on cell phone use.

Right on Red

Massachusetts law permits drivers to make a right turn at a red light after stopping, provided that there is no sign prohibiting it and that the driver with the red light yields to other traffic.

Cell phone use while driving

In most cases, drivers can use hand-held cell phones while driving in Massachusetts communities, as long as it does not get in the way of the operation of the vehicle and one hand stays on the wheel. The exceptions to this are drivers under the age of 18 and school and commercial bus drivers.  Texting while driving is illegal for all drivers.
