In 1621, Pilgrims celebrated making it through their first year in the new world alive with a harvest celebration, and invited their friend Massasoit to join them. Today, the town of Plymouth is host to Plimoth Plantation, a living museum where people dressed as Pilgrims show visitors how the early settlers lived. Not too far from the plantation, you can stop by Plymouth Rock, on which the date 1620 is engraved. Or you can take a tour on the Mayflower II and learn about the long journey over the sea.Belkin Family Lookout Farm (formerly Marino Farm)The farm is one of the more unusual farms in the area. Marino farm was established in 1680, and it is one of the oldest working farms in Massachusetts. But it's not your typical farm. Among the animals you can expect to see are you are deer, llama, bison, and ostriches. You can also buy organically grown food at the market.Walden PondIn the 1840s, Henry David Thoreau made his home in a small, one-room shack in Walden Woods. Today, the pond is surrounded by protected plantlife and walking paths that become even more beautiful when the leaves turn color.Wayside InnThe Wayside Inn opened in 1716 as a "house of entertainment." Nearby is the Wayside Inn Grist Mills, a one-room schoolhouse that some have said was the inspiration behind the nursery rhyme "Mary Had A Little Lamb" (a claim that's disputed by Sterling, MA), and an old town store. It's a trip back in time, and the area makes a relaxing foliage drive with its windy roads and antique shops.Cranberry ToursCape Cod Cranberry Grower's Association says the cranberry harvest takes place from mid-September through early November. Cranberries are a popular product on the Cape, and tours are available for those interested.Old Sturbridge VillageThe Central MA village takes you back to a time long past. Meet farmers and craftsmen, and learn about "spinning."Mohawk TrailThe historic area in Western Massachusetts, along Route 2, is a popular destination for visitors during foliage drives. There are several lookout spots, where you can stop and see miles of tree-covered mountains and hills. Many of the towns have festivals and attractions of their own, including Sherburne Falls with its Bridge of Flowers.BerkshiresYou can explore Mount Greylock, the highest mountain in Massachusetts, or any of the other peaks and towns in this mountainous region of Western MA. Also explore the small towns, such as North Adams, which is known for its arts community and MoCA, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.Norman Rockwell MuseumThis museum in the Western MA town of Stockbridge is where the painter spent the last 25 years of his life.Also see: Author: C.
